International Women’s Day Celebrated at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam on 8th March, 2019.

The Women Cell of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region organized a programme to mark the International Women’ day on this year‘s theme “Think equal, Build smart, innovate for change” on 8th March, 2019. The function was attended by sister Juliana, motivational speaker from Shillong; Dr. N. Prakash, Director, ICAR RC NEH, Umiam; Dr. D.J. Rajkhowa, JD, Nagaland Centre; Mr. P. Kumar, Sr. FAO and Mr. P. Ghosh, AO. Sister Juliana stressing on the theme “think equal” said that people should not be in the habit of looking down at others because of various reasons which is not constructive. We need to consider all as equal only then can we develop the spirit of healthy competition and live in harmony.  Emphasizing on “build smart” she said that we need to be resourceful, quick and smart to take steps which will enable us to build our lives in a meaningful way. We should always take into consideration what is around us to progress to the extent where we will be able to make a mark for ourselves.  Dwelling on “innovate for change” she said that we should always try to introduce something different which will improve our all round wellbeing. We should try ways and means of doing regular things in a different way so that less energy is used and we receive more gains.

Dr. N. Prakash, Director, ICAR RC NEH, Umiam in his speech said that God created every one equal but it is the society which is creating discrimination between male and female. The Constitution of India has given equal rights to both man and women but it is the people who create differences. He stressed that without women family, society and country cannot move ahead in a progressive manner. He emphasized that work culture has to change, work productivity needs to be improved and we should always try to solve any issue which causes inconvenience to the working atmosphere of the women staff adding that any support facilities required, he will try his best to provide.

Dr. Rajkhowa, Joint Director, Nagaland Centre stressed on the need for active and meaningful adjustment of behavior which will go a long way in creating a healthy and harmonious atmosphere in the working place. He said that due to certain socio-economic factors women were behind but nevertheless things are changing at present and women are excelling in various field. He emphasized that knowledge is the best power and therefore everyone should be educated so that maximum benefit of this power can be reaped.

Dr. Pampi Paul, Scientist, Social Science, emphazised on the fact that no one can make us feel inferior without our permission, therefore women should be aware of their rights.  She further said that nutritional security is of utmost importance as 60% of the women are anemic.  She said that women are the best managers and because of this quality many self help groups are doing a commendable work.  

During the interactive session it was suggested that constant liaison among the women cell in different ICAR institutes of the country should be maintained so that when a lady staff has to move for official purpose basic  support system is always present. A posture campaign was also organized as part of the Women‘s Day celebration. The function was attended by female scientific, technical, administrative, RA, SRF, Young Professional, TSM, labours and contractual staff.
